How to Address Incorrect Public Records

Public records are not always accurate largely due to human error. They can often contain incorrect spellings of names, a wrong address, inaccurate date of birth, financial errors that can effect your credit history, or even criminal charges you didn't commit. It's important to know what's on your personal background file in case there are any discrepancies. Once you identify inaccurate reports you can begin the process to correct them. After conducting a search on our site you will want to resolve the issues so the false reports don't effect you in a negative way.

A good place to start is by making a visit to the city/town clerk's office and report any problems or inconsistencies with your records. Bring your license or other identification with you since you will have to prove your identity. You may also want to bring copies of any bills or receipts, property documents, tax forms, and a list of any records you believe are incorrect, etc to make the process easier. If any records on file are wrong, simply request that they change the information in their database. While you are there you can also have them check all records in your name for spelling errors, wrong addresses, incorrect information and remember to make sure your voter registration is accurate and updated too.

If you find a false or inaccurate criminal record in your name the best thing to do is hire an attorney. A lawyer will represent you in the proper way since they know the law and have experience dealing with the court system. They will work with you to get the record removed and to clear your name. It's essential you correct any false criminal activity on your record since a criminal record can impact your life and work against you. In addition, there could possibly be a warrant out for your arrest you weren't even aware of. This means you could be arrested at any time for a crime you didn't commit. For these reasons it's advised that people educate themselves as to what's in their public file to avoid undue issues with the law or other unnecessary problems.
